Position Summary
The Director Communications & Publications is responsible for key communication projects that reach broad external and internal audiences and help set the tone and voice for National Jewish Health messaging. Collaborating with others in the department, the executive office and across the organization, the person in this role has a broad understanding of the organization and the background to help craft and guide key messages and works closely with the VP Communications in all these areas.  The role leads teams focused on planning and producing the Annual Report, Pulmonary Highlights, and is part of the team for regular executive communications, and works hands on these areas. The Director brings exceptional writing and editing skills to the role and provides advice, consultation and review for other key communication products and channels produced by the department. The Director is part of the team for interaction with the news media and other external audiences. 

Essential Duties

  1. Manages and develops an effective staff: providing effective communication, leadership, guidance and resources. Determines staff qualifications and competency:  recruits, interviews, selects, hires, trains, orients, mentors, evaluates, coaches, counsels, disciplines, and rewards.  Establishes and monitors staff safety and regulatory compliance.
  2. Plans, researches, writes and coordinates timely production of Annual Report. Plans, writes and assists with other major publications including Pulmonary Highlights. 
  3. Identifies and develops research and clinical news and feature stories for department communications ranging from email newsletters to print publications, National Jewish Health website, social media, development and assigned executive communications.
  4. Collaborates with others on communications team to develop, enhance and leverage content for multiple communication channels including social media. Serves as editorial and content resource for managing editor and project lead for other programs and services within communications & marketing and related departments.  Writes and edits content for multiple outlets and communication channels including press releases, print, email, web and social media. 
  5. Oversees planning, development and distribution of various and key National Jewish Health email newsletters, and other electronic communications as designated. May variously serve as writer/editor, reviewer or coach depending on the publication. Responsible for Board & Trustees newsletter and collaborates with VP Communications for regular internal leadership communications. Coaches others in content development and responsible for accuracy, including appropriate sourcing, citations and approvals.
  6. Develops and maintains relationships with key leaders (medical and research in particular) across the organization to identify and pursue stories of exceptional work throughout the organization. 
  7. Serves as member of media relations team and contributes to planning and program management for National Jewish Health, including contributing to annual plan, identifying goals, objectives and addressing target audiences to enhance public relations and support the marketing and development functions 
  8. Develops and maintains contact with assigned areas of  key news media.  As needed develops and prepares story concepts. Writes and supervises production of news releases, editorials,  features, educational and informational materials, fact sheets and other media information materials to be submitted to media and information sources nationwide.  Follows up to ensure media acceptance and understanding.
  9. Manages external vendors which may include freelance and contract contributors such as  writers, photographers, producers. 
  10. Shares responsibility for development of and maintenance of a crisis communication plan and active reputation management plan.  Collaborates with VP Communications & Media Relations and entire communications team to ensure readiness to implement crisis communications plan if needed, and to ensure cross-functional approach to reputation management. 
  11. Assists and participates with Vice President Communications in planning and carrying out an effective local, state and national government relations program. Represents National Jewish Health with designated neighborhood, community and professional associations as assigned.

Supervisory or Managerial Responsibility
Manages 1-3 employees.

May travel periodically for certain projects such as Annual Report, which may involve 1 to 3 days away at a time. Willingness to travel locally and within state, when assigned, to represent the organization. Travel locally to meetings and to support partners as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related area required. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. Work Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years in writing and editing in public relations, scientific, health care, and/or corporate communications required.  Experience working with news media from a corporate communications perspective strongly preferred. Past experience producing Annual Reports and experience in health care/and or scientific/research, health-related areas preferred. 
  3. Special Training, Certification or Licensure: None


Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000
