Summary

 

Position Summary    

Responsible for coordinating clinical oncology pharmacy services and verifying that the pharmacy provides optimal clinical services on a daily basis. Ensures safety in compounding, preparing and dispensing chemotherapy to patients. Facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes through the use of appropriate, safe, cost-effective drug therapies.


Essential Duties    

  1. Reviews, interprets physician orders/prescriptions and dispenses accurate medications for patients, in compliance with federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations, pertaining to the practice of pharmacy, and performs compounding of medications as required.
  2. Performs therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacokinetic analysis to advise medical staff on safe and efficacious drug therapy.
  3. Consults with medical / nursing staff to verify safe, appropriate, cost-effective, age-specific medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols. Monitors drug therapy regimens for allergies, contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, drug-laboratory test interactions, and adverse drug reactions, appropriateness of drug and dose, and therapeutic duplications.
  4. Prepares chemotherapy medications according to established policies, procedures and guidelines verifying the correct dose is verified and dispensed. Monitors chemotherapy drug regimens for allergies, contraindications and appropriateness of dose. 
  5. Manages drug inventory and ordering to ensure the appropriate medications are readily available for patients.
  6. Prepares and assures the accurate and efficient preparation of intravenous solutions, injectable immunotherapy, intravenous immunoglobulin, intravenous antibiotics, and other medication for intravenous therapy, and verifies dosage amounts for the patients’ age and intravenous compatibilities are accurately determined.
  7. Counsels patients/customers in a manner honoring patient confidentiality on medication use and storage.
  8. Performs competencies (including age-specific competencies) as identified through the departmental competency program.  Implements care and services that recognize age-specific needs and issues for the customer served.
  9. Performs formal and informal continuing education on drug therapy to medical, nursing and pharmacy staff as needed.

Other Duties    

  1. Performs as a back up to main campus and off-site locations as needed. 
  2. Leads the work of Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technicians.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: B.S. Pharmacy degree, required. Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D). Degree preferred.
  2. Work Experience: A minimum of two (2) or more years of recent and related experience in clinical pharmacy practice, with demonstrated proficiency in pharmacokinetics and chemotherapy preparation.
  3. Special Training, Certification or Licensure: Colorado Pharmacist License required. CPR/BLS required. Must obtain Board Certification in Oncology within five years of hire.

 

Salary Range: $55.00 - $62.00
