Summary

 

We are looking for a Registered Nurse II for our Adult Occupation Health Clinic, can it be you?  We would like someone who independently plans and provides general nursing care for patients and families in the ambulatory outpatient care setting utilizing a systematic approach incorporating assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Practices in accordance with physician orders, established policies and procedures, and the values stated in the National Jewish Health and the Department of Nursing vision and mission. Provides nursing services within the scope of the RN as defined by the Colorado Board of Nursing.

Our Occupational Medicine department is not a traditional Occupational Medicine Clinic, as we work with patients from all over who have had respiratory-related work-place exposures.  This has included armed services deployments, first responders to 9/11, miners, and many others.  We also work with patients diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoid disease, and do evaluations for metal allergies.

What does the Division of Environmental and Occupation Health Science do? We are a multidisciplinary team focused on the detection, treatment, and prevention of pulmonary diseases that are primarily a result of occupational/environmental exposures. We provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with a broad range of occupational/environmental and granulomatous lung diseases. We also work with employees, unions, industry, government and others to provide exposure assessment, medical surveillance, respirator fit programs and education to ultimately reduce and prevent occupational and environmental illnesses.

Why National Jewish Health? With more than 25 years of experience, our division is recognized internationally for its comprehensive clinical, research, and educational programs in occupational and environmental lung diseases. We have a number of research programs. Specifically, we define the clinical presentation of new and already known occupational and environmental lung diseases, their natural history and the exposures, as well as clinical, genetic, and other risk factors and inflammatory/immunologic mechanisms that lead to these occupational/environmental and other granulomatous lung diseases.

 

Position Summary
Accurately plans and provides professional nursing care for patients, families, and communities utilizing a systematic approach incorporating assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.  The Registered Nurse II is responsible and accountable for the facilitation and management of care coordination across the healthcare continuum. Utilizes the nursing process to work with interdisciplinary teams to provide safe and personalized care. Demonstrates core competencies in the area of practice.


Essential Duties
 
  1. Assessment:  Collects pertinent data and information relative to the patient’s and family’s health or situation.  Demonstrates proficient, skillful and rapid assessment in triage of patient problems and needs in the outpatient clinic, specialty care area, telephone health services setting, and/or ongoing care [Standard of Practice (SP) 1].
  2. Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential problems and issues. Prioritizing a focus on wellness, health promotion, chronic disease management, and disease prevention [SP 2].
  3. Identifies expected outcomes for an individualized plan for the patient/family, recognizing that the patient and family are in control regarding the choice and compliance with a care regimen [SP 3].
  4. Develops, intervenes, evaluates a plan of care in collaboration with patients, families, and other team members identifying actual and potential patient care needs.  Updates the plan of care and documents in the approved format.  Documents nursing activity and the patient’s response to nursing intervention. [SP 4].
  5. Ensures the plan of care reflects the cultural, spiritual, intellectual, age, educational, and psychosocial differences of individual patients, families, groups, and communities [SP 4].
  6. Implements identified plan.  Establishes competencies and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients in accordance with National Jewish Health Policies and Procedures [SP 5].
  7. Conducts time-limited, episodic, individual nurse-patient encounters and interventions and frequently establishes long-term relationships with patients, families, and caregivers [SP 5]. 
  8. Manages telephone communications including: assessing patient needs over the phone; providing appropriate advice, directing patient to appropriate level of care: communicating status to physician: addressing prescription requests: documenting actions in approved format [SP 5].
  9. Coordination: facilitates access to appropriate medical and health care, nursing consultation /intervention, follow-up, and surveillance [SP 5a].
  10. Teaching: Provides patient education using methods and approaches recognizing the specific needs and concerns of the individual patient; supports the patient and caregiver (s) to become informed customers about the options, costs, risks, and benefits of health care services [SP 5b].  
  11. Participates in projects, activities, committees, related to nursing and health care in clinical and organizational settings.  Functions as a preceptor as assigned.
  12. Recommends evidenced based practice and research strategies to improve nursing quality.

  7. Quality of Practice: Contributes to quality nursing practice: Ensures practice is safe, effective, efficient, equitable, timely, and patient centered; identifies barriers and opportunities to improve safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equitability, timeliness, and patient centeredness; recommends strategies to improve nursing quality [SPP 14].

Education

Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing required, BSN preferred.


Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of recent and related Registered Nurse (RN) experience required.  Different patient care areas may require specific skill set experience.


Special Training, Certification or Licensure

Current Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) License and current CPR/BLS certification required.  ACLS or PALS if applicable for specific unit required.  Certification in a relevant specialty preferred.

 
Salary Range: $32.00 - $43.00
