Position Summary
Responsible for the day to day regulatory activities pertaining to the care and use of animals for research and teaching at National Jewish Health (NJH) in conjunction with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Serves as the liaison with internal stakeholders (Principal Investigators, study staff, Committee Chairs, Committee members, Department Chairs, the Attending Veterinarian and Biological Resource Center (BRC) Director and staff) as well as external entities (AAALAC, OLAW, USDA, FDA, CDC, OSA). Under the direction of the Institutional Official, ensures that animal care and use activities are in compliance with federal regulations and Institutional Policies and Procedures.  Position requires considerable exercise of professional judgement related to situations of a sensitive, confidential and technical nature.

Essential Duties

  1. Supports the effective and efficient administrative operation of the Animal Welfare Program, including application review, regulatory reporting, record-keeping, electronic system implementation and maintenance and research compliance efforts in the Research Regulatory Affairs Office. 
  2. Conducts independent pre-reviews and advises investigators as needed when completing application submissions. Manages grant congruence process and reviews/approves Just in Time submissions of new funding. 
  3. Coordinates the IACUC meetings, including establishment of the agendas, minutes, and correspondence associated with these meetings. 
  4. Assists in the coordination of Post Approval Monitoring of research activities. Ensures PI compliance with surveillance, data reporting, and adverse event reporting.
  5. Schedules and plans the semi-annual animal research facilities inspections, and program review. Coordinates, compiles and finalizes semi-annual reports pertaining to animal research which are submitted to the Institutional Official. 
  6. Develops and coordinates inter-institutional IACUC review agreements for collaborative research with other universities. 
  7. Works closely with the Institutional Official, the Chairs, and the Attending Veterinarian in the implementation and maintenance of policies, and the monitoring of compliance by the investigators with the regulations. 
  8. Conducts educational programs of IACUC regulatory requirements geared to institutional research personnel and the IACUC membership, including orientation and training of newly-appointed members, develops training materials and creates presentations. 
  9. Evaluates office efficiency and recommends improvements of office operations to the Institutional Official. Assists other Research Regulatory Affairs office staff in their areas of specialization as agreed upon with the Institutional Official.
  10. Interfaces effectively with EH&S colleagues, the IBC, Office of Animal Welfare, principal investigators (PI) and researchers, departmental chairs and deans, research support personnel, facilities staff, animal care staff, Infectious Waste Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Employee Health and HR, and the IRB.

Supervisory or Managerial Responsibility

Minimal local travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred.  Coursework in biology, health care, public health, life science or related field preferred.
  2. Work Experience: A minimum of 5 years of research experience involving vertebrate animals and experience in an IACUC administrative capacity or service as an IACUC member is required.
  3. Special Training, Certification or Licensure: CPIA (Certified Professional IACUC Administrator) Certification is preferred. 

Salary Range: $67,000 - $83,000
