The Petrache Lab at National Jewish Health is seeking a Lab Researcher to join our team. Our laboratory investigates pulmonary diseases such as COPD, and mechanisms of lung injury and repair. The research projects focus on the role of sphingolipid metabolism, cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vapor, and susceptibility to viral or bacterial infections. 

The methods used in our laboratory include tissue culture, exposure of cells to cigarette smoke and e-cigarettes, isolation of cells from murine and human tissues, transfections, RNA and protein isolation, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, histology, immunofluorescence, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and mouse models of lung disease. Training will be provided, but experience is required for this position, and preference will be given to candidates experienced in specific basic science research methods. 

The selected candidate for this position in this position will:

  • Work under the supervision of the principal investigator and senior lab personnel.
  • Be involved in daily collaborative interaction with other lab members.
  • Be highly organized and able to maintain clear and reliable record, including computer databases.
  • Perform experiments independently.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues and offer solutions.
  • Collect, analyze and graph the data using basic statistical software (Microsoft Office Suite, GraphPad Prism).
  • Present data in lab meetings, with option of presenting at institutional as well as regional and national scientific meetings.
  • Participate in preparation of manuscript.
  • Participate in laboratory maintenance & operations.


Position Summary
The position is responsible for planning, developing, executing and monitoring testing techniques and investigative procedures under the direction of a Principal Investigator or Lab Manager.   This lab researcher position is in the laboratory of Dr. Irina Petrache, Division Chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.  This candidate will work on a team and will assist in the experimental design and execution as pertained to the ongoing research projects in the laboratory.  These projects will include sphingolipid metabolism in lung disease and injury repair, the effects of e-cigarette smoke on lung injury, repair, and susceptibility to viral and/or bacterial infection.  This candidate will work directly under a senior member of the laboratory to perform experiments for the laboratory and to assist in data analyses, preparation of graphs and images, preparation of slides and data for lab meetings and will be able to present data at annual conferences.  

Essential Duties

  1. Develops new techniques and investigative procedures, including scientific routines, computer programming techniques and data reporting techniques.
  2. Monitors quality control of routines, experiments, general laboratory activities and the use of research animals in the laboratory setting.
  3. Performs laboratory functions unique to the assigned laboratory.
  4. Provides general guidance to laboratory staff, including technicians, support and auxiliary staff.  Acts as a leader for laboratory programs and staff in assigned areas.
  5. Demonstrates enhanced proficiency in data analysis, preparation of glassware, extraction and plating procedures, programming and mathematical ordering systems.
  6. Prepares statistical tabulations, using a calculator or computer.
  7. Oversees supply functions, inventory control, equipment use and maintenance, and animal care and ordering, as needed.
  8. Maintains compliance with all institutional / safety training requirements.
  9. Maintains laboratory records, supplies, samples in an organized manner (such as a laboratory notebook and sample storage record).
  10. Acts a liaison to other department personnel, outside investigators, and vendors.
  11. Performs routine and non-routine tests leading to the successful completion of developed experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: BS /BA Degree required
  2. Work Experience: 2 years of Laboratory Experience required.A Master’s Degree and laboratory experience may be substituted for the required 2 years of work experience.
  3. Special Training, Certification or Licensure: None


Salary Range: $45,000 - $52,000
